| 2006 Grant Recipient Profile - The Massachusetts Children's Fund
The Massachusetts Children’s Fund is a nonprofit
organization with one single purpose: top provide baby food and supplies to children in
need throughout Massachusetts. Located in
Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and headed by its
President, Dan Levine, Massachusetts Children’s Fund aims to fill those glaring
needs which the available state programs cannot or do not address. Food Stamps and other
programs simply do not even come close to addressing the need in our state.
The Massachusetts Children’s Fund provides
its services using private and corporate
donations. With this money the Fund offers
food, nutritional education, and other emergency
services to those in need. To the surprise
of many people, many low-income families
do not have adequate access to baby food
(for example, many food pantries will not
handle any food in glass jars) leaving many
children in these families undernourished.
In addition to providing food, the Massachusetts
Children’s Fund has a network of volunteer workers
who go to schools, shelters, and other targeted locations
to provide nutritional education. This education
is a complementary but essential component of
the Fund’s mission of improving the nutrition of the
children of Massachusetts.
The Fund also solicits donations of cribs, gates,
and other baby supplies and distributes these to families
in need. In doing so, the Fund enhances the safety
and overall quality of life for low-income children
by providing equipment their families would otherwise
not be able to afford.
