| 2006 Grant Recipient Profile - The Barton Center for Diabetes Education
The Barton Center for Diabetes Education
Whether sharing stories by the campfire, meeting new
friends with diabetes, or backpacking through the wilds, all
experiences at Barton contribute to the magic of the place.
The Barton Center for Diabetes Education is dedicated to
enhancing the lives of children and young adults with diabetes
and their family members.
It is the largest, independent
camping and educational program in the country,
operating summer camping programs for boys and girls
with diabetes as well as diverse year-round educational programs
for children, adults and families. Specific programs
are designed to engage all in age appropriate diabetes discussions
while integrating Barton’s own style of fun.
Today, some 1,500 children and
their family members participate in
our programs annually including the
Clara Barton resident camp, co-ed
teen wilderness adventures, family programs, youth weekends, and day
camps in New York, Connecticut
and Massachusetts.
We collaborate on programs with a
number of major medical centers,
including the Joslin Diabetes
Center, Mt. Sinai Hospital,
University of Massachusetts
Memorial Health Care, as well as
the American Diabetes Association
and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Barton’s diabetes team consists of
an experienced endocrinologist, nurse educator, dietician, mental health professional, and well trained
counselors – many of whom have diabetes themselves
and serve as wonderful role models.
The Barton Center’s main campus in North Oxford,
Massachusetts is located on the scenic grounds of the
Clara Barton birthplace museum and consists of the most
modern facilities on 208 acres of woodlands and fields.
Please visit The Barton Center Website for a schedule of our
programs or to learn more.
